When a supplier sells a "bolt-on" upgrade, you can be assured of one thing. That is, it won't just "bolt-on".
So when the buyer of our '55 Chev Pick-up asked us to do a power steering upgrade before he picks it up, we had pretty low expectations when we purchased a "bolt-on" kit out of the US.
But hey! We are a professional outfit with all the gear. And Jackie is a qualified engine builder and fabricator...we can do this!
Well, so far Jackie has had to trim the inner guard, relocate the steering linkages, move a shock absorber and modify a brake caliper, engine mount and the chassis to achieve clearance for the steering box. Surprisingly, it mounts on the opposite side of the chassis rail to the original. He will also need to move the alternator to the opposite side of the engine, purchase new pulleys and maybe a new water pump in order to mount the power steering pump.
I have confidence that Jackie will get the job completed tomorrow. But my heart goes out to the average poor bastard who buys a "bolt-on" kit!
