The metal whisperer...

Leon Betts

I like to retain original sheet metal wherever possible. Reproduction panels have a place in the restoration process but they will always be inferior to the original.

So I asked Roland whether he could save the left hand quarter on our 65 Fastback Mustang retro-mid project. It suffered some substantial accident damage sometime during the last 50 years...not to mention the dubious repairs.

Not one to step back from a challenge, Roland has spent the best part of two days beating, cutting, fabricating, measuring, welding and shrinking his way through the task. The end result was well and truly worth the time and effort.

Great job Roland.

Cheers Leon

A dent puller is used to get the basic shape back.

Roland rolled the guards for some big rubber while he was at it.

Finishing off the welds.

Welding up holes left by previous repairers.

The inner and outer sections were cut out so the worst of the 'wrinkles' could be beat out.

Roland shrinks the metal with a torch to get rid of some bulges left by the previous repairers.

Roland takes contour measurements from the good quarter.

And once it was fixed it was welded back in.

And here is the finished product prior to being primed.
